It is the most effective way of prevention and control of infection, specially in this global pandemic covid -19 situations. So there may be questions in your mind that how to perform effective hand washing? When to perform it and how long it takes to perform hand washing? Types and ways of hand hygiene.

steps of handwashing technique-
 The 6 - steps of proper handwashing techniques are:
After applying palmful amount of hand washing products in cupped of your palms
Step1: rub hands palm to palm.
Step2: rub the back of both hands-
Right Palm over left dorsum with interlaced fingers and vice versa.
Step3: interlace fingers and rub hands together.
Step4: interlock fingers and rub the back of fingers of both hands.
Step5: rub thumb in a rotating manner followed by the area between index finger and thumb for both hands.
Step6: rub fingertips on palm for both hands.

Hand hygiene when and why?
Hand hygiene must be performed immediately in the following situations- 
# 2 before and 3 after i.e.- 
BEFORE- 
1.before patient contact- 
When- clean your hands before touching a patient when approaching him or her .
Why- to protect the patient against harmful germs carried on your hands.
2.before any aseptic task-
When-clean your hands immediately before any aseptic task.
Why-to protect the patient against harmful germs, including the patients own germs, entering his or her body.
AFTER-
1.after body fluid exposure risk-
When- clean your hands immediately after an exposure risk to body fluid (and after gloves removal).
Why- to protect yourself and the health care environment from harmful patients germs.
2.after patients contact-
When-clean your hands after touching a patient and his or her immediate surrounding when leaving.
Why- to protect yourself and health care environment from harmful germs.
3.after contact with patients surroundings-
When-clean your hands after touching any object or furniture in the patients immediate surroundings, when leaving- even without touching the patient.
Why-to protect yourself and the health care environment from harmful patients germs.
 
There are two ways of hand hygiene- 
1. With hand rub 
2. With soap and water
Types of hand hygiene-
 there are three types- 
1.social hand hygiene
2. Medical hand hygiene
3. Surgical hand hygiene

How long it takes to perform hand hygiene- 
1.social hand hygiene- 
With hand rub- 20-30 seconds
With soap and water- 30-60 seconds
2. Medical hand hygiene- 
With hand rub- 20-30 seconds
With soap and water- 1-2 minutes
3. Surgical hand hygiene-
It is not performed with hand rub 
With soap and water- 3-5 minutes

 So it is most important to perform handwashing or hand hygiene now a days in such a global pandemic situation like covid 19 as hand rub liquids or products contains about 0.5% chlorhexidine which is enough to kill most of the invisible infectious organisms hiding in your hands. if you perform it effectively no doubt you are away from not only covid 19 but also from many other infectious organisms which can cause diseases.
